Improvements on 'HIGH' exam question: What went well: you analysed specifically you mentioned connotations occasionally Even better if: you referred to the smaller details rather than focusing on the most obvious ones you used varied media language with reference to theory
Improved answer: Through the whole CD cover, there is a distinct theme of the colour green. For example, there is a green filter on the picture and the text is also green. In this context, the colour green is significant because it connotes rebellious acts and illegal use of drugs (specifically marijuana). This conveys that the album is meant for an older, more mature audience. It also means that the music in it was produced for a niche audience since it is clearly inappropriate for children. This is further reinforced by the 'Parental Advisory, Explicit Content' symbol because it further indicates that the album is not intended for children, thus having a niche audience. The symbol also helps us distinguish that the composers are likely to be rappers since the characteristics of the CD Cover could be associated with the current stereotype of rappers.
In addition to this, the two men are wearing necklaces, have piercings and also neck tattoos which are very much visible and give the person dangerous vibes. This again relates to a stereotypical rapper because these things are uncommon in normal, everyday men. However, these things also connote excessive amounts of wealth, giving us an idea of their nature and attitude.
Furthermore, we can infer that both rappers have an equal part in the music contained in the album since on the CD Cover, their names are in the same place. This could be because they want to represent the equality between the two artists and also to keep both artists' reputations positive (and equal) rather than having one of them take majority of the credit.
In terms of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, I think these two composers would be at the fourth elevation of the pyramid. I think this because they have everything underneath the fourth section. Considering they make music, it's clear that they have stable sources of food and water. Also, because they are famous, they'd want to create a reputation which people would respect, and they've done that by creating music which a certain group of people with specific interests like, gaining respect. However, only their audience respects them so to get through to the fifth elevation, the rappers would need to gain the respect of those who don't like them.
