Zoe Elizabeth Sugg, better known as Zoella is a popular British beauty vlogger who used to document her life in video blogs quite often in the past. However, nowadays she is involved with other things such as her beauty line, her books as well as her appearances on TV and the radio. She initially started off with a beauty blog at the age of 17. After she got a small following on it, she started a YouTube channel called Zoella280930 which has now been changed to just Zoella. At this very moment, she has 12,037,684 subscribers on YouTube and 11,051,280 followers on Instagram. She clearly does have quite a large following. Zoe was born in Lacock, Wiltshire on the 28th of March, 1990 meaning she is 28 years old. Having a business at her age is quite an achievement. Since she is relatively young, she does have a boyfriend name Alfred Sidney better known as Alfie Deyes who also creates content on YouTube. Not to mention she also won the 'Best British vlogger' award on BBC's Radio 1 Teen Awards 2014.

Zoella represents herself in a very specific manner. For example, we could take her use of language. She doesn't use foul language such as swear words which allows her content to be open to people of a younger age group as well. She mostly uses language and words specific to her subject such as make up and fashion: nomenclature.
We can take a specific type of video that she makes as an example which is her monthly favorites video that she posts from time to time. Her most recent one was in March of 2018 where she lists products and brands that she has been using lately. This also endorses those specific products since it encourages her audience to go out and buy the products that she uses to create such a good image of herself and also to use her care routines. As well as talking about her products, she also adds links in her description box to the online URL of the products, she also does this with the clothes that she is wearing in each video. For example, in her March favorites video, she inserted a link in the description box of where to buy the red jumpsuit that she was wearing. In terms of Zoella's clothing, she wears modest clothing according to British culture. However, not according to middle eastern culture since wearing shorts and tops that expose too much skin would be inappropriate and disrespectful towards the culture. She does not wear clothing that overtly sexualises herself which again makes her content appropriate for younger audiences. The clothes she wears are also fairly casual. |
Reception Theory example:
The movie 'The Room' can be used as an example to explain the concept of Reception Theory. The movie was intended to be a thrilling horror movie however audiences everywhere thought it was so ridiculous that people started classifying it as a comedy. Even though it diverted from it's initial horror movie success, it was still successful but in a way that the director never thought it would. It is also known as one of the worst movies ever made. The dominant/preferred reading for this movie would be an article with comments from critics about how unbelievably scary the movie was or how thrilling/romantic was. However, there are little to no articles which claim 'The Room' was a good movie. As you would expect, there are hundreds of articles about how unbelievably hysterical the film was. For example, an article on the New York Times called , 'When Your Movie Is A Hit For All The Wrong Reasons' stated a very relevant rhetorical question. 'How do you handle it when the movie that you meant to be one thing turns out to be a different thing entirely?' Another article called 'The Awful Cult Movie Everyone Loves' clearly describes the success of the movie in the name of the article itself. |
